Quail refers to several genera of small to mid-sized birds generally placed in the order Galliformes. They are game birds known for their short tails and often compact bodies. There are two main groups: Old World quail (family Phasianidae) and New World quail (family Odontophoridae). Quails are ground-nesting birds that eat mainly seeds, berries, and insects. Many species of quail are hunted as game and also farmed for their meat and eggs.

The common quail (Coturnix coturnix), also called the European quail, is a well-known small migratory game bird found mainly in Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It has a distinctive call and migrates seasonally. The Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) is another significant species, widely used in egg production and as a biological research model. Quail eggs and meat are considered delicacies in many cultures.

Quails often live in open, brushy environments and are known for their elusive behavior, usually heard more often than seen. They lay about a dozen eggs per clutch, and the young are precocial, leaving the nest shortly after hatching.

Overall, quail birds have ecological, agricultural, and culinary importance worldwide.
